We are living in an unparalleled technological age where yesterday’s science fiction ever more rapidly becomes today’s reality.
The well trodden paths that our organisations have followed over the years are coming to an end. Many of the avenues that lay ahead of us are uncharted. Standing still is not an option in this fast moving world. If our organisation is to survive and grow, we have to keep moving forward. But how do we know which is the right road to take? How do we avoid going in the wrong direction and steer clear of the potholes and dead ends?
Not all of us are cut out to be trailblazers or pioneers and there’ll never be a Sat Nav that can blurt out business directions for us to blindly follow.
The answer is not rocket science. On our journey we may well end up taking a wrong road but if we keep our wits about us and observe the lay of the land, we can spot the potholes and dead ends long before they become a problem and we’ll be able to safely change direction. You won’t be able to do this though if you’re wearing blinkers or blindfolds.
In essence what I’m saying here is open your mind to the world of change. Do your best to visualise what it can do to your organisation. Does it offer opportunity or danger? What do you see?
It’s an instinctive primal skill our hunter/gatherer forefathers had to make the most of just to stay alive. Over time, as civilisation became more and more established and safe, we have become too complacent with our lot. All too many of us have let this most basic of instincts become dormant.
The world is changing to such an extent, we need to reawaken this instinctive skill within us if we are to survive. Our ancestors were most successful when they used it as part of a team effort and that’s what we need to do now. Those with the greatest capacity to make the most of their visionary skills have the potential to become trailblazers and pioneers. But for the majority of us, we all have the ability to play our part in keeping our organisations on a secure path to success.
